Social Responsibility in Marketing: Does It Work? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not new to business or society at all. It is an area of business betterment that began decades ago. It all started with the turn of the 20th century when companies came under attack for being too powerful, which made customers feel uneasy. Some of the world’s largest businesses dedicate a portion of the marketing costs to socially responsible marketing because they have seen their efforts fruition with profits; the Coca-Cola Company is a great example. The Coca-Cola Company shows how focusing on the customer can lead to more sales and future loyalty. The corporation noticed the power of soc ial responsibility and acted. Coke used a program called â€Å"5by20† to help promote the benefit of empowering women. The program was designed to empower five million women entrepreneurs worldwide by 2020. Their reason for doing so was because research indicated that empowering women can have a long-lasting effect, including increased revenues and numbers of workers, plus better educated and healthier families (Hayzlett, 2016). Positive media coverage on CSR activities can have a significant impact on a company’s bottom line. The inverse is also true. Businesses that ignore corporate social responsibility run the risk of doing harm to their brand and their bottom line. Consumers are only willing to pay a premium price when they have a strong commitment to the good cause of a CSR initiative (Sen Bhattacharya, 2001).
